Research requests

Throughout the year, many research requests are submitted verbally or electronically to us, Bob and Cindy Zimmerman. We make every attempt to answer as many as possible. These are some of the most recent requests:
...Sand Merchant, went down in 1941 in Lake Superior, all hands lost

...S.S. Michigan, built in 1881 and went down in 1885 off Holland, MI

...Ann Arbor 5, car ferry, sank off South Haven, MI

...H.C. Akeley (shipwreck)

...commercial vessels laid up in Lake Kalamazoo Harbor over the winter

...present-day Great Lakes cruising

...J.S. Crouse, built in Saugatuck, MI in 1898

...the fire aboard the S.S. South American in 1924

...Keewatin’s role in WW I & II

We are asked quite often about the Keewatin’s role during WW I and II. The Keewatin continued with her regular service for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a passenger and freight vessel. From old menus we note, “pooled train service” with the Canadian National Railway. These menus also encourage the purchase of War Savings Stamps, list sugar and butter rationing, and this quote, “All persons in ordering...ought to consider the needs of Great Britain and her Allies.”
